Lago Calima
I stumbled across Lago Calima during my attempt to get away from the traffic and long lines in Cali. Calima became the largest artificial lake in Colombia in 1961 during the building of the hydroelectric system. It’s a cool place to spend a few days relaxing along the water, going for a swim or taking advantage of the water sports.
How to Arrive
From Cali: From the bus terminal there is a direct bus at 1300 to Darien, the town at the edge of the lake. $14,500COP (~$4.50USD). 2-2.5 hours with Trans Calima.
If you cannot make the 1300 direct bus then you will need to take a bus to nearby Buga and transfer to Darien from there. Buses to Buga run frequently throughout the day from Cali’s terminal.
Things to Do
- Lago Calima is a really laid back place. Honestly, the best thing to do is find a nice spot along the banks to relax.
- Kayak, jet ski, and paddle board rentals are available all over the place.
- Take a swim
- Learn to kite surf. The lake is a great place to learn, the wind really picks up at times!
- Grab a few of your friends for a BBQ.
- Sit around the campfire during the evenings.
Where to Stay
- Berlin Camping -There are plenty of campsites but I recommend this one. It’s the only one I found that sits right on the edge of the water instead of the far side of the road. Berlin is a bit far from the town so you might need a moto taxi from Darien. It’s also a good idea to bring some of the supplies you’d need. $15,000COP ($5USD)p/p for personal tent. $20,000COP ($7USD) for a rental tent. Rooms, wifi and on-site restaurant available.
Afterthoughts
I really enjoyed taking it easy on the lake’s edge for a few nights. The lake is beautiful! I would recommend visiting for anyone needing to slow things down and get some fresh air.
